Jimmy Russell - original 9 hole layout (1967) 18 holes - 5923 yds - Par 71
Gaborone Golf Club moved to its present location in 1967 - the original nine hole layout ran around an airstrip ! Jimmy Russell, a government roads engineer, did the original layout of the course. Initially the greens were oiled sand that required smoothing down with a scraper before putting and the tees were built of concrete blocks with rubber mating.
The course has been developed and refined over the last 30 years and is now a fine test of golf in tranquil surrounds with over 80 species of birdlife and a variety of animals that makes every round a pleasure. The lush kikuyu fairways give way to generous semi rough before the natural Botswana bush makes any wayward shot an adventure all of its own. The greens are on the slow side and receive frequent attention to keep them maintained.
SUN CITY - RSA
Gaborone is a 150 mile drive from the famous golf resort of Sun City, in neighbouring South Africa, and can therefore easily be combined with the later. Deep in the African bushveld, at the foot of the Pilanesburg Mountains to the Northwest of Johannesburg, lies one of the world's most unique resorts, Sun City. This African fantasy, Las Vegas style resort, offers a dazzling variety of entertainment and amenities, including four hotels and two championship golf courses both designed by South Africa's golf legend Gary Player.
Botswana is an African success story. After achieving democratic rule in 1966, three of the world’s richest diamond-bearing formations were discovered within its borders. Today, the country enjoys a high standard of economic stability, education and health care, which, with the exception of South Africa, is unequalled elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa.
Easily accessible from Johannesburg, Windhoek and Victoria Falls; Botswana is a magnificent country with many wonderful highlights for the intrepid traveler. Botswana is a land of staggering beauty with a small population; it is ideally located in the heart of Southern Africa. It is bordered in the north and west by Namibia, in the east by Zimbabwe and South Africa is its southern neighbour.
The country is flat, and up to 70% is covered by the Kalahari Desert, and its beauty lies in its wilderness, wildlife and cultural diversity. From the crystal-clear waters of the Okavango Delta also known as the 'jewel of the Kalahari' with its variety of wildlife and aquatic birds to the large herds of elephant and buffalo in the Chobe National Park to the dry savannah of the Savuti Channel with its ever present predators and migrating zebra.
Gaborone is the heart of the nation, a hub of economic and social activity, gleaming with high rise buildings, modern day facilities and a variety of shopping, restaurant and fast food chains. Growing economic opportunities attract investors from all corners of the world. Gaborone is also the seat of Government and the gateway to the great outdoors of this prosperous country.
Gaborone invites you to discover its contrasting attractions - a city merging modernity with tradition. Whether its golf, game viewing, art and culture, history, entertainment or shopping, Gaborone offers you the best of these. Mokolodi Game Reserve where you can stroke Cheetah and walk with elephant and giraffe, Botswana Craft where visitors love to indulge in buying locally made crafts, Oodi Village renowned for its weaving community project, Thamaga Village known for its pottery community project - these to mention a few.
Gaborone’s climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with the sporadic storm in summer and some chilly nights in winter, providing for a perfect year round golf destination.
