Nairobi Golf

Nairobi Golf

Kenya has long been considered one of the world's great undiscovered golf destinations, where the early European settlers left behind a beautiful legacy of distinctive golf courses. Several of them can be found around the capital Nairobi, all of championship standards and many regular stops of the European PGA Tour.

• Royal Nairobi Golf Club (1906)

Kenya's oldest club - Venue of several European PGA Open

18 holes - 7,021 yards - Par 71

In 1906, a nine hole golf course and a club house were laid out at the Royal Golf Club, named after King George V, and became the first course in Kenya. Royal Nairobi hosts some of the country's prestigious events. The front nine is relatively flat, while the back nine stretch over a rolling hill side. The course is  well maintained while flowering bushes and a large assortment of tree species lend color and aesthetic appeal to the course. Royal Nairobi Golf Club hosts some of the prettiest holes in Kenya and offers the average golfer an opportunity to card a good round of golf.

• Karen Golf & Country Club (1933)

Redesigned by Peter Markovic - Venue of the European PGA Kenya Open

18 holes - 6,893 yards - Par 72

Often considered as one of the prettiest courses in Kenya for its profusion of flowering trees and bushes, Karen Country Club is a must play and is certainly one of the top 18-hole championship courses in the country. Nairobi

Unlike the ancient port of Mombasa, Nairobi is a completely modern creation that owes its existence to the East Africa railway. Originally established as a depot en route to Kampala in modern-day Uganda, Nairobi benefited from ample water supplies and a high elevation, which prevented malaria from taking hold.

In 1907, Nairobi became the capital of British East Africa, and subsequently attracted waves of white settlers, including Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame. After independence, Nairobi underwent massive urbanization, resulting in the infamous slums depicted in The Constant Gardener. Today the city is seeking to reinvent itself as the economic hub of not only Kenya, but also the East Africa Community.

Nairobi National Park

Just outside town, Nairobi National Park is the only place in the world where you can go on a real safari with a backdrop of towering city skyline ! This savannah ecosystem is complete with its own wild beast, zebra, antelope, buffalo herds, lions and hyenas.

Karen Blixen's House & Museum

The museum was for many years the home of Danish Baroness Karen Blixen who established herself here in the early part of the last century - her story was made famous by the movie “Out of Africa”, with robert Redford and Meryl Streep. Endowed with lavish beautiful gardens. , the present day Museum site is at the heart of the larger coffee plantation run by Blixen between 1914 and 1931 and it was donated by the Danish Government to Kenya at independence. The house still has some belongings and furniture owned by Karen Blixen as well as some pieces donated by the makers of the film, "Out of Africa".

The Lake Nakuru National Park

In the expansive Great Rift Valley about two hours drive from Nairobi, Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the few National Parks set up especially to protect bird life. It is famous for the its Flamingos, besides a large population of mammals. Leopards, Lions, Hyenas, Giraffes, Rhinoceros and Waterbucks are usually sighted along the lake shores. This is also home of Baboons, Impalas, Buffalos, Monkeys, and Warthogs. Reedbucks and Elands. However, the main attractions are the Rhinos and the Park has been designated as a Rhino Sanctuary.

Safaris

Masai Mara National Park and Mount Kenya are must see destinations when in Kenya, although a couple of days will at least be necessary to visit them from the capital.
