Namibia

A former German colony and South African protectorate, Namibia is a captivating country extending along the Atlantic coast between Angola, Botswana and South Africa. One of the least densely populated countries of the world, Namibia provides an exciting destination for nature lovers, with its extensive sand dunes, deserts and mountains forming a fascinating landscape, many of it protected under the national park scheme - Namibia is the only country in the world to specifically address conservation and the protection of its natural resources in its constitution.

Windhoek

Situated in the Central Highlands, at around 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) above sea level, Windhoek is a small, attractive city surrounded by mountains with a strong German influence, reflected both in its architecture and food. Windhoek has a desert- like climate, with very hot summers and mild winters, cool nights and 300 days of sunshine a year, providing perfect conditions to play golf.

The social, economic, and cultural centre of the country, Windhoek has a population of over 300.000 inhabitants. The city centre is characterised by historic German colonial architecture and imposing modern structures. Dominating the skyline is the German Christuskirche church, a mixture of Art Nouveau and neo-Gothic design, and the Titenpalast parliament building. The railway station is a Cape Dutch edifice dating back to 1912 and Independence Avenue is a pleasant tree-lined place with fountains and walkways providing a relaxing ambience among the modern buildings of the central business district. The German influence is not only apparent in the architecture and colonial style buildings, but also in the food and locally brewed beer.
