The Resort

A two hour drive south of Dakar on the Petite Côte (Small Coast), the seaside resort of Saly lies on a protected bay of tranquil azure waters, lapping a three mile long white sandy beach lined by coconut trees. Created in the 1980', Saly is West Africa's largest seaside resort, extending between the Atlantic Ocean and the forest of Bandia, in Sérère country. The original fishing village of Saly, a former Portuguese trading port founded in the 15th C., has retained its timeless appeal and charm.

Saly's leading hotel, Lamantin Beach Resort & Spa is an attractive five star property with direct access to the beach and the marina. Built and decorated in traditional local Sérère style, accommodation is distributed between a series of free standing bungalows. Dining facilities at the resort include the main restaurant and the gastronomic Beluga, serving French-African fusion cuisine. The furnished sandy beach offers a range of water activities, while the marina plays host to the Fishing Club, West Africa's largest sport fishing centre. The resort also boasts a state-of-the-art Spa with thalasso treatments, hydrotherapy and balneaotherapy circuit.

One of West Africa's few 18-hole regulation courses, Golf de Saly lies a short distance from Lamantin Beach Resort. Back in 1994, two promoters and a Belgian architect made the bet to turn an arid plateau of bushland into a golf course. Throughout the course, the player will discover different environments, from the dry bush and savannah, to the tropical forest and some majestic one thousand year-old baobab trees. This garden of Eden is maintained by a brigade of 40 gardeners and peopled by hundreds of birds, squirrels and monkeys. Caddies are included in the greenfees and will greatly help first time visitors to come to term with the layout.

• Saly Golf Course

Vicky Berrnstein (1994) 18 holes - 6,603 yds - Par 72

One of West Africa's few 18-hole regulation courses, Golf de Saly lies a short distance from Lamantin Beach Resort. Back in 1994, two promoters and a Belgian architect made the bet to turn an arid plateau of bushland into a golf course. Over 60.000 trees and as many decorative species were planted and after four years of hard work, the golf course was inaugurated.

The aim of the architect when building the course was to present a challenge that could be enjoyed by players of all skills and abilities, where one can play long and easy or short and tactically. Seven of the holes have water hazards, which is quite exceptional for an area where it rains only 20 days per year!

Throughout the course, the player will discover different environments, from the dry bush and savannah, to the tropical forest and some majestic one thousand year-old baobab trees. More than 250 botanical essences were reintroduced and flowers with enchanting names abound, exuding scents that will inebriate the players. This garden of Eden is maintained by a brigade of 40 gardeners and peopled by hundreds of birds, squirrels and monkeys.

Caddies are included in the greenfees and will greatly help first time visitors to come to term with the layout.

Senegal

Senegal

Located on the western bulge of Africa, at the continent's most westerly point, the small Republic of Senegal sits on the Atlantic Ocean between Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania. Senegal is one of the most stable democracy in Africa and is the cradle of internationally renown musicians such as Youssouf N’Dour - Peter Gabriel is a regular visitor here in search of new World Music talents.

After three centuries of French colonial rule, Senegal became independent in 1960. Before independence the city of Dakar was the capital of French West Africa, which included nine French-speaking states, and Dakar has been the capital of the independent Republic since then. The country retained strong ties with France and the French influence remains in the architecture of the city, where well preserved colonial buildings, the monumental government house and café terraces stand testimony to its history. Situated on the tip of the Cap Vert Peninsula, the modern capital teems with life and boasts luxurious hotels, a wide range of restaurants, beaches and watersports, a casino and an active nightlife scene. It is also one of the busiest ports for cruise ships in Africa.
