• Royal Brunei Golf Club @ Jerudong Park County Club
Ronald Fream (1990) 18 holes - 6,750 yds - Par 72
Roayl Brunei is part of a larger facility called Jerudong Park Country Club that includes an amusement park and a Polo Club. Described by its designer, Ronald Fream, as the "Augusta National of Asia", it is considered one of the best courses in Asia and one of the most exclusive in the world.
The Royal Brunei Golf & Country Club used to be the exclusive personal playground of Brunei's ruler and his special guests. It has previously been open only to guests of the ruler, which have included former US President Bill Clinton, Royal dignitaries and some of the world's leading golfers such as Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo and Tony Jacklin. However, His Majesty has recently allowed outsiders to play this course maintained to US PGA standards and modelled by Ron Fream on Augusta National, home of the US Masters. Its tight fairways and fast greens are a true challenge enhanced by the "jungle sounds" coming from the neighbouring zoo and its resident elephants and tigers.
• Royal Brunei Airlines Golf Club
Max Wexler (year) 18 holes - 6,946 yds - par 72
RBA Golf Club is the first 18-hole public golf course in Brunei, a subsidiary of Royal Brunei Airlines. Running alongside the runways of the airport, the layout is generally characterised by flat terrain, with huge man-made lakes spread out over the course. These lakes add to the beauty of the surroundings, while irrigating the layout. It is obvious that designer Max Wexler went to great lengths to retain as much of the original vegetation as possible, especially on the second nine. It is visually pleasing but not too forgiving of wayward shots that may wind up out-of-bounds or, worse still, in the water. Threatening bunkers are strategically placed along landing areas and around the greens to penalise inaccuracy, while mounding on the fairway perimeter demand spot-on accuracy. Clubhouse facilities include a two-tier, flood-lit driving range and a pro-shop and golfer's terrace.
• Pantai Mentiri Golf Club
Architect unknown (????) 18 holes - 6,676 yds - Par 72
The challenge at on this course is to avoid the numerous water hazards which form the main feature of the course. Pantai Mentiri Golf Club has been the venue for many organised tournaments including in 1999 the 20th South East Asian Games.
Tucked on the Northwest corner of the island of Borneo, between sea and jungle on the border with Malaysia, Brunei is one of the world's richest countries due to its immense oil and gas reserves, yet it is still a rather unknown destination on the world travel market.
Despite its modest size the sultanate of Brunei Darussalam is enormously wealthy in both natural resources and attractions, and at the same time the most environmentally pristine country in Asia. Adventure travellers are draw to the natural splendour and adrenalin charged sporting activities of this region, most of which is virgin rainforest, while more conservative tourists will enjoy the country miles of white sandy beach or visits to the ancient capital of Bandar Seri Begawan.
Brunei's culture is shaped by its Malay majority and deeply entrenched Islamic traditions, bound together by the sultanate's uninterrupted 600-year royal heritage. Its citizens enjoy one of the world's highest standards of living, including free healthcare, education and housing, all this thanks to the generosity of the Sultan, who is the sole beneficiary of the country's oil production !
