Tashee Golf & Country Club

Ta Shee Golf & Country Club is one of Taiwan top ten courses and the only one to host tournaments of the European, Australian and Asian Tour, with top golf stars such as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els or Nick Faldo having left their footprints on the fairways. Completely redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1999, Ta Shee features three combinable nines. Special attention has been paid to make the course environmentally friendly. A waste treatment plant was built on site to achieve zero pollution, while fairways and greens were planted with  resistant species of grass to avoid the use of pesticide.

• Kingfisher & Egret Course

Robert Trent Jones II (1999) 18 holes - 6,653 yds - Par 72

The Kingfisher and Egret nines are the championship combination, the layout taking full advantage of the hilly nature of the land and its fairways unwinding smoothly between creeks, ponds and valleys. Five thousand camphor trees and large ficuses line the fairways and numerous flowers species were planted to present players with the different tones of the four seasons. Wild life can also be appreciate on the course.

Robet Trent Jones II redesign of the courses was constrained by the existing routing of the  holes. The charge was to lend an exciting, upbeat character to a formerly flat site beset with irrigation and drainage problems and landscaping issues. RTJ II met these challenges by reworking lakes and hazards to enhance strategic elements of play, adding new bunkers and removing some that were pre-existing, and reinventing the green complexes. The result is a flowing and picturesque shot maker's course where golfers must hit well planned and executed shots to set up the best approaches.

Reviews of the new design have been stellar. Ernie Els praised the championship course as "RTJ II has created a new image for Ta Shee Golf and Country Club that enables it to be on the list of world class golf courses." while his fellow Tiger Woods said, "I'm very impressed that there is such an international-class golf course in Taiwan. The quality is Super!"

• Babbler Course

Robert Trent Jones II (1999) 9 holes - 2,956 yds - Par 36

Shorter regualtion course while set in the same lush surrounding as its more famous neighbours and floodlit in summer, allowing for night play.

• Facilities

• Clubhouse

Ta Shee also boasts a luxury clubhouse with a full service proshop, changing rooms with showers and two restaurants. The fine dining Ming Garden is an elegant venue with large bay windows opening onto the fairways, while the Light Food & Coffee Bar caters for casual eating.

Golf Around Taipei

Golf Around Taipei

The game of golf was introduced under Japanese rule before World War II and it was not till 1929 that the first 18-hole course would be built. Golf saw a revival in the 1940's thanks to the American presence and the island, about the size of Belgium, now boast over 70 golf courses. Thanks to its subtropical climate, golf can played year round in pleasant conditions, although summers tend to be hot and humid.

• Sunrise Golf & Country Club

Robert Trent Jones Jr. (1992) Mountain

The first course to be designed by R.T. Jones II in Taiwan, The Sunrise G&CC boast an enjoyable yet challenging course of international standard. The course was laid out with plenty of room to spread in a wonderful location with 360º panoramic views. The front nine flows smoothly through picturesque surroundings while the back nine is more rugged. The course as a whole stretches over hilly terrain and fairways are dotted with numerous bunkers and water hazards, leading to fast and undulating greens, providing for a challenging round of golf - it has hosted several China Opens. The course is Floodlit from April to November. Sunrise G&CC also offers an on-site five star hotel with a host of activities.

• Orient Golf & Country Club

Ronald Fream (1994) Parkland

A fair test of golf of golf, this Ronald Fream layout offers a friendly challenge as most of the holes afford a good view at the greens, making approach shots easier to read. Yet these greens are on the small size, heavily contoured and protected by clever bunkering. The back nine is tougher than the front nine while the whole course is floodlit for night play.

In addition to the golf course, there is an award-winning and fully equipped clubhouse that was recognized by the Japanese Architectural Association as one of the top ten buildings in Asia ! The clubhouse manages to be functional, contemporary and sympathetic to its environment at the same time, providing players with showers and sauna, elegant guestrooms and a panoramic lakeside restaurant.

• Taiwan Golf & Country Club

(1918) Parkland, Woodland

Founded in 1918, this is Taiwan's oldest golf club and a place of golf pilgrimage well worth a visit. It is not only the corner stone of golf history in the country but also the cradle of many of Taiwan's golf champions. The original layout was greatly damaged during World War II, but it was gradually  repaired therafter by the American military and remained under their management till 1974. The course is located on the Danshuei river estuary. Exposed to the winds and breezes of the ocean and with the narrow fairways lined by dense woods, this venerable course offers a challenging round of golf right on the outskirts of the capital Taipei.

Taiwan

About the size of belgium, the island of Taiwan lies some 180 km. (111 m.) off the southeastern coast of mainland China, across the Formosa Straight - The island was know as Formosa, from the Portuguese "Ilha Formosa" or beautiful island. In 1895, Chian was forced to cede Taiwan to Japan, until it reversed to China after World Word II, but only for a short period as in 1949, when Mao's communists forces took control of China, two millions Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a separate Chinese government ion the island.

Stretching from North to Sout for about 390 km. and 140 km. wide at its broadest point, the island is characterized by the contrast between the mountainous East, consisting mostly of rugged mountains running from the northern to the southern tip of the island, and the gently rolling plains in the west sloping down to the Formosa Straight. Taiwan's highest point culminates at 3,952 meters and there are five other peaks over 3,500 meters (11,000 ft.). Taipei experiences a humid subtropical climate, with warm, sunny and humid summers while winters are cool and mild. Due to its location, the island is affected by the Pacific typhoon season between June and October.
