The Resort

At the turn of the century, few places in Europe were as fashionable as the three famous spa resorts of the "Bohemian Triangle", formed by Frantiskovy Lazne, Marianske Lazne and Karlovy Vary, better known under their German names Franzensbad, Marienbad and Karlsbad. Located in the wooded hills of Western Bohemia on the German border, this spa triangle is also a prime golf destination that includes the country's two oldest courses at Marienbad and Karlsbad, Gary Player design at Astoria Golf Resort and the brand new Frantiskovy Lazne Golf Club.

If Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) is the oldest course in the country - it was built in 1905, Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is the eldest golf club - it was founded in 1904, although the present layout only dates back to 1933. After the fall of communism in 1989, the club underwent a full renovation to become one of Europe's foremost golf resort, listed in Europe's top 100 and venue of several international tournaments. The 19th Hole Bar and the Golf Restaurant are managed by Grandhotel Pupp. As a major shareholder of Karlovy Vary Golf Resort, Grandhotel Pupp offers preferential green fees and golf packages at the club.

Overlooking the river at the heart town, Grandhotel Pupp is Karlovy Vary flagship property. Founded in 1701, it was rebuilt in luxurious and extravagant style in the 1870's to welcome the European aristocracy who came here to "take the waters". Today, the Grandhotel Pupp facilities comprise two connected buildings, River Side and Park Side. Both share the same dining, leisure and business facilities. The culinary tradition of the founder Mr. Pupp is reflected in the pastry offer which includes the famous Pupp cakes. Wellness facilities at the Grandhotel include pool and saunas, fitness centre, salt cave, Salon Cosmetique and Pupp Royal Spa, while Karlsbad's hot mineral springs are within walking distance.

• Astoria Golf Resort (Cihelny)

Gary Player (2001) Woodland/Openland

In Cihelny, just off the main road to Marienbad and ten minutes south of Karlsbad, Astoria Golf Resort nestles in the peaceful Tepla Valley upstream from Karlsbad. The course was laid out in 2001 by Gary Player Design over rolling wooded grounds in quiet and pristine surroundings. It is one of the finest layouts in the country and has hosted the 2003 European Junior Championship.

• Royal GC Marianske Lazne (Marienbad)

Architect unknown (1905) Parkland

In the the old thermal town of Marianske Lazne, previously know as Marienbad, this is the oldest course in the Czech Republic. The course was inaugurated in 1905 by HRH Edward II, King of England. Amidst a picturesque landscape, this championship layout was reconstructed and the cluhouse enlarged to host the Volvo PGA tour events.

• Frantiskovy Lazne GC (Franzensbad)

Peter Walker & Heinz Fehring (2003) Woodland/Openland

Frantiskovy Lazne Golf Club enjoys an idyllic situation just north of the spa town of Franzensbad, right on the German border. This challenging 18-hole golf course, opened in 2003, was designed by the Anglo-German team of Peter Walker and Heinz Fehring. The course combines both the use of the natural lie of the land and some strategical yet unobtrusive course architecture, with undulating fairways in a spectacular countryside setting.

Karlsbad - Karlovy Vary

Karlsbad - Karlovy Vary

Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) is not only renowned for its hot spring water, but also for the outstanding beauty of its setting in the deep wooded Tepla Valley and its elegant turn of the century atmosphere. The luxury hotels and villas on the river banks and on the steep slopes surrounding the town gave Karlsbad its special charm.

The springs are said to have been discovered in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV, when he was on a hunting party - Karlsbad means "Charles' Baths" and was named after the emperor. The spa was much visited by the European aristocracy for centuries and amongst the celebrities who flocked to the resort to take the waters, were such prominent artists as Beethoven and Goethe. Life at the resort revolves around the famous "Kolonada" colonnade, dating back to the late 19th century and where visitors take the waters.
