FRANCE

• Domaine de Divonne

M. Nakowski + Donald Harradine (1931)

Vntage golf course considered as one of the most beautiful and traditional layouts in France. Built in 1931 by Nakowski, the course has undergone numerous transformations over its existence, in particular the works of Donald Harradine in 1963 who contributed to enhance the original design. Laid out over the estate's gently rolling parkland grounds, the fairways stretch between majestic age old trees and natural pounds, with glimpse of Lake Geneva and the Alps. From Floyd, Palmer and Ballesteros to Els recently, they all took the challenge of every holes and all left Divonne with the promise to come back.

• Megève Mont d'Arbois Golf Club

Henry Cotton (1922)

On the Mont d'Arbois slopes, at over 1,300 metres (4,300 ft.) at the outskirts of the charming and exclusive mountain resort of Megeve, the Domaine du Mont d'Arbois enjoys a privileged situation in a beautiful Alpine setting. Founded back in 1922 by the Baroness Maurice de Rothschild, the golf course featured only nine holes at that time, designed by Francois Parodi. Later on, the Baroness, an enthusiast golfer herself, entrusted famous English architect Sir Henry Cotton to extend and restyle the layout to a full eighteen hole course, which was inaugurated in 1962. Cotton's design made the most of the natural relief and vegetation of the mountainous terrain, the layout blending harmoniously with the slopes of the Mont d'Arbois. The narrow fairways rise in tiers on both side of the clubhouse with smooth inclines, offering splendid views over the surroundings mountains and the Mont Blanc range in the distance.

• Chamonix Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1935)

The Chamonix Golf Club is situated in an exceptional site at the bottom of the Chamonix valley, dominated by the impressive Mont Blanc mountain range, culminating at 4,807 metres (15,770 ft.) and Europe's highest peak. The creation of the orginal 9 hole course dates back to the 1935, but it was not until 1982 that Chamonix would be extended to a full eighteen hole course and totally restyled by Robert Trent Jones Senior. At an altitude of 1,050 metres, the air is thin and crisp, but the only think mountainous about this course is the landscape and altitude as it lies totally flat at the bottom of the valley. Crossed by several crystal clear streams and the gushing Arve river, rushing from the nearby glaciers on its way to Geneva, the layout features narrow fairways lined by tall fir and birch trees.

Robert Trent Jones Senior has designed a very imaginative layout with a great diversity. Geneva is a private club and visitors are welcome, but they are not allowed to play on weekends or bank holidays.

Pete Dye (1987)
