Behind the hotel lies the old centre of Funchal, the well-known "old town". Its close relationship to the sea, the outstanding and exclusive views over the harbour where the cruise ships dock, its picturesque surroundings and the unique flavours of its cuisine result in genuine urban tranquility.
• Vila Porto Mare Resort
Located in Funchal with an innovative concept, the Vila Porto Mare resort offers facilities which are shared by three hotels. However, the character of each one of these is guaranteed by individual receptions and different room/apartment types. The 20.000m2 of gardens and surroundings belonging to the Vila Porto Mare resort represent one of the most interesting botanical oases in Madeira. The subtropical gardens with more than 470 unique species, identified with individual explanatory tags, make this green area a real paradise.

- Suite Hotel Eden Mare

The 99 units divided into studios, one and two bedroom apartments are decorated with a touch of exoticism. The Residence apartments combine views over the ocean with tropical gardens.
• Porto Bay Serra Golf
Porto Bay Hotels has recently taken over the inn at Serra Golf. The heart of the Estalagem Serra Golf is a 1920's manor house which has belonged to the same family since its construction and was successively used as a teahouse in the 1940's and later on as Santo da Serra clubhouse. Completely renovated to accommodate golfers while keeping its Art Nouveau architectural characteristics and historical value give the property its peculiar charm and atmosphere. Facilities are distributed between the original Manor House and the New Wing. The Manor House hosts the living room with fireplace, the veranda and the restaurant, a number of intimate sitting rooms and the library.
Santo da Serra Golf Club
Perched high up in the hills overlooking the south-eastern coast of the island and the bay of Machico, amidst the dense Laurissilva primeval forest, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the picturesque village of Santo da Serra has long been a favourite retreat for Funchal's gentry seeking a quieter and cooler summer retreat. For decades the village has given solace to Madeira's high society. Today, it welcomes the contemporary golf traveller at the Santo da Serra Golf Club
• Championship Course
founded, 1937 | Robert Trent Jones Junior (1991) 18 holes - 6,665 yds - Par 72
At an altitude of 500 metres and commanding spectacular views over the south coast of the island, this championship course is mountain golf at its best. The Championship course is formed by the Desertas and Machico nines and has played host to the European PGA opening tournament Madeira Open since 1993. The course was built on such irregular and thick vegetation land than huge efforts were necessary to bring the project to fruition. Due to the nature of the terrain, several holes are played over gaping ravines and feature quite a few breathtaking down hillers. Nevertheless and in spite of the mountainous land, the course features generous fairways with wide landing area.
• Nine Hole Course
Robert Trent Jones Junior (1999) 9 holes - 3,185 yds - Par 36
This new course enjoys the same extraordinary setting and panorimic views as its championship sister course, although on a rather flatter terrain.
Palheiro & Porto Santo Golf Club
PALHEIRO GOLF CLUB
Nestled in the hills east of Funchal, Quinta do Palheiro was built in 1801 by the Conde de Carvalhal as a country retreat where he created a magnificent botanical collection. The Estate was acquired in 1835 by the Blandy family - famous Madeira wine traders, who continued to develop the gardens, now famous throughout Europe. Today, the Palheiro Estate comprises the famous Palheiro Gardens, the championship Palheiro Golf Club, the five star Casa Velha do Palheiro Inn and the exclusive Balancal Palheiro Golf real estate development, all dramatically perched some six hundred metres above the Ocean and providing breathtaking panoramic views.
• Palheiro Course
Cabell B. Robinson (1993) 18 holes - 6,658 yds - Par 72
Set amidst the beautiful Quinta do Palheiro botanical estate, the Palheiro course was designed as a continuous eighteen hole with "nine out" and "nine in", in traditional links style like St. Andrews, for the best possible combination of holes. Perched some six hundred metres above the Atlantic Ocean, the course commands some breathtaking views over Funchal and its bay. Faced with a difficult terrain to build a golf course, Cabell B. Robinson has skilfully designed the course within the gracious parkland surrounding, making a dramatic use of the ridges and deep valleys forming the estate.
PORTO SANTO GOLF CLUB
On the neighbouring island, Porto Santo’s brand-new golf course, designed by champion Severiano Ballesteros, stretches all the way across the island from dune-rolling beach to dramatic basalt cliffs. It offers that ideal combination – natural beauty and a challenging game.Porto Santo can easily be layed during the day from Madeira, etting the morning ferry and back to Funchal with the evening one. Otherwise, there are serveral air connections daily.
• Championship Course
Severiano Ballesteros ( ) 18 holes - 7,036 yds - Par 72
The layout was designed to blend in with the natural landscape, and immense care was taken to minimize impact on the environment. The course features two distinct zones – a South Course in the American tradition, dotted with lakes and demanding a long, precise game; and a North Course played along spectacular cliff tops. There is also a nine-hole ‘pitch-and-putt’ course of par-three holes (ideal for training precision shots), and a driving range. The clubhouse is a triumph of modern design, but blends harmoniously into the landscape, with its dry-stone walling, natural wood and hip wicker furniture. Facilities include a sauna and Jacuzzi, and there’s a good pro shop. The Golf Club bar and restaurant command a splendid view over the island and out to sea.
Madeira & Porto Santo
References to the Madeira Archipelago can be found dating back to Roman times when they were known as the purple islands... However, their discovery in 1419 is attributed to the Portuguese Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco.
The name Madeira (wood) comes from the abundant vegetation which the navigators found on this paradise floating in the middle of the Atlantic. Composed of the Islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens (the last two are nature reserves), the Madeira Archipelago is situated in the Atlantic ocean between 30º and 33º latitude north, 978km south-west of Lisbon and around 700km off the African coast at almost the same latitude as Casablanca, relatively close to the Straits of Gibraltar.
Since its discovery in the XVth century the Island of Madeira became a strategic staging post for ships leaving Europe en route to South Africa, Africa and the Orient. A crossroads for different cultures and people many of whom fell in love with the island and decided to stay, contributing to a multi-cultural society. The island's main crops were sugar and the famous Madeira wine which is still widely appreciated all over the world today.
The island of Madeira is one of the oldest and most prestigious tourist destinations in Europe. With around two thirds of the island classified as a Nature Reserve, contact with nature is unparalleled. The abundant prehistoric Laurisilva forest found on Madeira was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
In sharp contrast with its largest sister island of Madeira, Porto Santo’s greatest attraction is without doubt its long sandy beach, stretching over nine kilometres from Vila Baleira to Ponta de Calheta – one of the island’s favourite swimming spots, and also a great place for a meal or sunset cocktail. The beach is popular with people from Madeira, as their own island has no sandy strands to speak of. The water, warmed by Gulf Stream currents, and the mild weather is increasingly attracting foreign visitors too. But the ample space means you won’t find shoulder-to-shoulder sunbathers as in so many other European resorts.
SATA, the Portuguese airline, offers around 12 flights a day (depending on the season) between Funchal and Porto Santo, the flying time for which is around only 15 mins. But the most popular way of getting to Porto Santo is by ferry, from Funchal. The boat usually leaves daily from Funchal at around 8h00, and return around 18h00.
