• Championship Course
Donald Steel (1991) 18 holes - 6,991 yds - Par 72 - CR 74,0 - Slope 133
The Prime course, composed of holes nos. 1 to 9, is Vila Sol Golf’s toughest course. The length and narrow width of the fairways on its first four holes, as well as it being famed for the Algarve’s “most difficult start”, make this course an appealing challenge. The Challenge course consists of holes nos. 10 to 18, where the difficulties lie in its greens being naturally more undulated than those of the Prime and Prestige courses, which means that greater accuracy is required of players in their green approach shots. The Prestige course completes the set of 27 holes at Vila Sol Golf. This course is shorter but, to offset this fact, it is narrower. Accuracy and not distance is the decisive factor on this course.
• Vila Sol Academy Golf Course
For groups of professionals or for those who want a faster start and short game, this golf course gives the opportunity for a major golf training session which also encompasses a driving range of 300 meters, two putting greens, with chip areas, bunkers, and 9 holes tee shots ( the nine hole golf Academy course covers the 19th to 27th)
Vilamoura has developed over the years into a unique golf resort and self contained community in Europe. It was also the first community in southern Europe to be granted the "Green Globe" award for its long term sustainable environmental practices while ensuring to fulfil the demands of the tourist market.
• The Old Course
Frank Pennink + Hawtree & Sons (1969+96)
This Frank Pennink designed parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees - the principal hazard - over gently undulating natural terrain. Although it opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised 27 years later although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.
• Pinhal Course
Frank Pennink & Robert Trent Jones, Jr. + Martin Hawtree (1976+85)
This was the second golf course built in Vilamoura and inaugurated in 1976, having originally been designed by Frank Pennink, the architect of the nearby Oceanico Old Course. Several refinements were incorporated over the years, the most significant one by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. The course is typified by rolling parkland terrain covered with numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that line many of the fairways and a few even stand out on fairways or near greens.
• Laguna Course
Joseph Lee & William “Rocky” Roquemore (1990+93)
Laid out over low lying coastal terrain, this course, with its many water hazards and few trees, is considerably different from the other ones in Vilamoura and many of its holes convey a links atmosphere. U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which opened in 1990 and many previous visitors will recognise it as part of the former 27 hole Vilamoura III course. It has been subject to continual improvements over the years.
• Millennium Course
Martin Hawtree (2000)
This conventional par 72 course opened in the year 2000, although the original back nine was formerly part of the 27-hole Laguna Course. Refurbishment to the existing nine holes commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers, particularly for holes 8 and 9, the only ones on this loop with water hazards, with the aim to simplify the strategy of the course to make it more golfer-friendly. The renovated 9 holes were joined together with the new 9-hole loop to offer a layout of different character, style and playing quality. The work was undertaken by the well-established UK golf Architects Hawtree & Sons which culminated in the creation of the new, exciting 18-hole Oceanico Millennium golf course.
• Victoria Course
Anrold Palmer (2004)
The Oceanico Victoria , which covers some 90 hectares, is the most recent golf course project of Arnold Palmer in Portugal. As one of the best and most sophisticated golf courses in Europe, every care has been taken to ensure the preservation of the wetlands and the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. Several lakes, occupying 13 hectares, provide mirrors of water and strategic reservoirs for irrigation.
The Algarve is situated in the southern most part of Portugal, stretching along the Atlantic between the Spanish border and Cabo Sao Vicente, Europe's south western most point. It was the last territory to be conquered back from the Moors in 1292 and their presence is still very much present in the architecture of the region with its whitewashed houses standing against the red earth and greenery. Sheltered from the northern winds by the Monchique range and facing south, the Algarve enjoys a privileged climate all year round, in brightly coloured and fertile surroundings covered with orange, fig and almond groves. The southern coastline is formed by a long stretch of fabulous beaches, only broken up by impressive reddish cliffs. The west coast is wilder and the sea rougher, with a string of solitary coves and beaches accessed through dirt tracks.
Algarve's capital Faro enjoys a central location on the coast and the old town has many historical monuments, including a medieval wall. Further west, Lagos is a well known touristic destination on the banks of a river estuary and its old quarters are enclosed within 15th century walls. Lagos is Algarve's party capital with plenty of bars and Ozzies, Kiwis, Canadians and Americans bar hoping. Also worth a visit is the little town of Monchique and its famous thermal spa, nestling in the Serra de Monchique mountain range, which highest point at nearly 1,000 meters enjoys splendid panoramic views across the Algarve to the Atlantic.
Sagres lies at the western end of the Algarve, next to Cabo Sao Vicente. It was here that five centuries ago, Prince Henrique set up a school of navigation which has played a crucial role in the Portuguese discoveries. The town has a magnificent fortress built in the 14th century with a giant 43 meters compass rose. Cabo Sao Vicente fortress is poised on high cliffs facing the Atlantic. It was built on the original Roman site of "Promontorium Sacrum" - or sacred promontory, as they believe the cape was the end of the world, being the southwestern-most point of Europe.
