A Jack Nicklaus’ signature course, the South Shore at Lake Las Vegas features dramatic elevation changes, its fairways stretching from the shores of the lake to the ridge tops, before falling down to rugged canyons and back again to the lake shores. Thanks to its five sets of tees, the layout offers a challenge to both high handicap, with forgiving fairways, and low handicap with strategic bunkering and forced carries over water hazards.

Las Vegas Golf
Las Vegas has an excellent and abundant offer of golf courses, all usually in excellent conditons and open to visitors, although it might be necessary to be a guest at one of the hotel running the facility. Here is a selection of the top ones in town.
• Cascata Golf Club
Rees Jones (2000) 18 holes - 7,137 yds - Par 72 - SSS 74,6 - Slope 143
Half an hour sout of Las Vegas, far away from the glitter of the gambling capital lies a hidden golf treasure in splendid isolation, only disturbed by the occasional vulture or snake to disctract the player. Cascata is the ultimate in privacy, luxury and service, while golf wise it is already considered as one of the best in the nation.
True to its name “Cascata”, meaning waterfall in Italian, the course hallmark is its 418-foot high waterfall that flows over mamouth boulders and cascading into a river that flows through the very heart of the clubhouse to end up into a quiet stream . Quite an extravagant sight in the midst of the Nevada desert ! Built to impress, Rees Jones did not fail to intimidate the layer with his design, helped by the natural setting which includes several elevation changes and the sheer vastness of the desert surrounding the layout.
Cascata was rated 29 out of 30 by a ZAGAT survey, in 2009 one of only a small handful of courses in America to earn that distinction. Tiger Woods, Michael Douglass, Catherine Zeta-Jones and other celebrities have played and enjoyed Cascata, whose sister course - and antagonist - is Rio Secco Golf Club, meaning “dry river” !
• Rio Secco Golf Club
Rees Jones (1997) 18 holes • 7,332 yds • Par 72 • SSS 75,7 • Slope 142
Rio Secco Golf Club opened in 1997 to immediate acclaim and soon was named one of "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses" by Golf Digest as well voted the No.1 public course in Nevada by the Las Vegas PGA. Home to the Butch Harmon School of Golf, Rio Secco can plays to an amazing distancefrom the tips to offer low-handicappers a real challenge, but serveral sets of tees, make the course accessible and enjoyable to players of all handciaps. Six holes run through steep canyons, six on a plateau overlooking Las Vegas city skyline, and six others in a broad desert wash, offering players an enjoyable and diverse round of golf through the scenic Nevada's desert natural surrounding, right at the door of Sin City.
• Shadow Creek Golf Club
Tom Fazio (1990 + 2008) 18 holes - 7,560 yds - Par 72
With thousands of mature huge pine trees, winding streems, waterfalls, lakes and the backdrop of majestic mountains, it is hard to imagine that you are playing on the outskirts of Las Vegas in the middle of the Nevada desert. This gorgeous and lavish course is the epitomy of what can be done with money and the will to shape the ground moving tons of earth ! Tom Fazio did a good job at this and deliver an enjoyable resort layout but championship maintenance standards: green keeping is top notch and playing conditions always perfect. Access to the course is nevertheless reserved to guests at Las Vegas MGM - It is well worth spending a night in town at the MGM Grand to play this fabulous course.
• Las Vegas National Golf Club
Bert Stamps (1961) 18 holes • Par 71 • 6,815 yards • SSS 72,9 • Slope 127
Nestling in the middle of the city, the Las Vegas National is a traditional layout and on of the city historic golf clubs. An oasis of green and peace in the midst of this desert city and gambling eldorado, with fairways lined by thousands of mature palm trees and greens flanked by bunkers and ponds. Ball placement is paramount on this narrow, old style layout.
• Bali Hai Golf Club
Brian Curley & Lee E. Schmidt (2000) 18 holes • Par 72 • 7,002 yards • SSS 73 • Slope 130
Golf World Top 50 Public Courses 2009
The only championship course located directly on Las Vegas famed Strip, Bali Hai is a pleasantly surprising tropical paradise and haven of peace for golfers in the midst of this bustling games capital. The course runs between large lakes, including a spectacular island green, more than 4,000 trees and towering palms, and over a thousand tropical plants and flowers, while white sand bunkers are set against black volcanic rock outcrops. From this lush setting, players will enjoy amazing views and glimpses of The Strip throughout the course. The course has earned many awards and accolades and caddies are available to make your round even more enjoyable.
The ultimate escape, Las Vegas is the US gamglbing capital nestling amidst the Nevada desert right on the Californian border. It is no hazard if the city was built there to provide easy access to Californian, as gambling is prohibited in the neighbouring state. Established in 1905, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city in 1911. With a metropolitan area of 2 million inhabitants, it is the Usa’s fastest growing metropolis and it has grown into one of the world’s top tourist destinations.
The city bills itself as “The Entertainment Capital of the World”, and its tolerance for adult entertainment earned it als the title of “Sin City”, turning Las Vegas a popular setting for movies and television programs. Lined by casinos, hotels, restaurants and bars lit up by an orgy of neons, the famous South Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as the Strip, stretches over four miles well outside the city limits and is the living heart of the gambling capital, where almost any desire can be satisfied, round the clock and at any price.
In contrast, the surrounding desert offers a striking contrast to the lights and glitz of the city, providing a host of oportunities for nature lovers and sport goers. In the end, Las Vegas is like a mirage, a big casino in the middle of nowhere, its glittering lights attracting toursits and gamblers like flies around a flodlight!
Valley of Fire State Park
Located 50 miles NE of Las Vegas, adjacent to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. It was named after the red sandstone formations which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions and seem to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. Other attractions of the park include strange rock formations created by sandstone and san dunes erosion, as well as fine examples of rock art (petroglyphs) left by the ancient Pueblo peoples can be found at several sites within the park.
