Inaugurated in 1992, it was designed by American architect Steve Smyers in collaboration with Australian golf legend Bob Stanton. The distinctive wine-bottle shaped tee markers afford first time visitors a unique and differentiated experience.
Following in the footsteps and philosophies of the great golf architects of The Golden Age of golf course design, Steve Smyers’ magnificent design and layout at Cypress Lakes has its roots in the strategic, risk reward principles that make golf such a great game for players of all abilities.During his career, Smyers has worked on many types of projects, including residential, resort and public daily-fee facilities, as well as private, golf-only clubs. He has designed and built more than 30 courses across the U.S. and 10 in various countries around the world, including Australia, the Philippines, South Africa, England, Ireland and Portugal. Blessed with vision, creativity, and imagination, Smyers has the flair of an artist and the ability to produce drama and variety in his designs. He has done just this at Cypress Lakes.
The recent re-routing of the course affords the golfer the opportunity to experience both the challenges of an exceptional inland links-style course for the front nine holes, while the back nine offers a completely different challenge, encompassing traditional park-land holes with sloping fairways.Cypress Lakes offers a challenge for golfers of all abilities. The course features over sixty huge bunkers, dramatically shaped elevated greens and stunning panoramic views from tees and greens to the valley's famous vineyards and its mountain backdrop.

• Newcastle Golf Club
Founded 1906 - Eric Apperly, Troon Golf (1935) 18 holes - 6,200 m. - Par 72
The Newcastle Golf Club is located at the mouth of the Hunter River in Fern Bay of Newcastle and is a true 'links-style' championship course, reminiscent of the great historic links courses of Ireland and Great Britain. Although founded in 1901 at the old racecourse site of Broadmeadow in Newcastle, the Newcastle Golf Club was not incorporated until 1906. In 1916 however, 9 holes were designed by Fred Popplewell Sr., on a stretch of sand dune country at Fern Bay. When transportation by ferry improved, the golf course became more accessible. It was only then, during the 1930's, that renowned architect, Eric Apperley designed the 18 hole course for the Newcastle Golf Club.
Extending amidst sand hills and surrounded by native Australian bushland, the course layout consists of forests lined with trees and bush that border the well trimmed rolling fairways with the typical "links style" bunkering. The greenside bunkers are subtly crafted using the natural undulating sand dune terrain
• Pacific Dunes
James Wilcher - 18 holes - 6,400 m. - Par 72
Winding through the natural undulations of the site, the international standard championship course comprises two distinct nine-holes. The outward nine is interwoven among natural lakes and wetlands, while the back nine meanders through shady Angophoras and Swamp Mahogany trees, an extension of the natural landscape. Both nines play to a par of 36 with the typical championship configuration incorporating two par fives and two par threes on each nine. You won't be able to blame the wind on an off day, with the layout designed to ensure there's no predominant hole orientation, regardless of wind direction.
