Fiji & Viti Levu Islands
Viti Levu is the heart of Fiji's 333 islands and the largest one. A island of lush mountainsides showcasing volcanic peaks and lush river valleys running out to barrier reefs. The English-speaking former British colony is home to 75% of the country's population and Fiji's capitla, Suva. The inhabitants are a unique mix of native Melanesian Fijians, Indians, whose ancestors came from India as labour force during the British colonial times, and a small number of Europeans and Chinese.
the opulation is mainly concentrated on the cost, as the mountainous interiors are of difficult access. A nation of trademen, the country as a whole is seeing a trend toward urbanization, towns tend to have large Indo-Fijian populations while most Melanesians remain in the same villages and houses inhabited by their ancestors since long before European colonisation. Fiji's Melanesians have a strong tradition of hospitality in complement to their communal lifestyle and are considered to be among the friendliest people in the world, although they were known as the “Canibal Islands” by the first Europeans discoverers for their fierceness and customs to eat their enemies !
