New Caledonia & Noumea
Halfway between Australia, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands, New Caledonia lies astride the Tropic of Capricorn and has a tropical climate with seasonal rains regulated by the trade winds. Noumea enjoys a drier, breezy climate, providing excellent condition for golf, outdoor activities and watersports - The coral reef barrier extending over 1,000 miles around the island forms the world’s second largest lagoon, a paradise for water activities.
The original inhabitants of the island are the Kanaks, of Melanesian origins. After being first visited by Captain Cook and Lapérouse, France took officially possession of New Caledonia in 1853, under Napoleon III, and has remained under French rule ever since. As its neighbour Australia, New Caledonia was a penal colony and about 22,000 criminals and political prisonners were sent to the island. Today, the island is a mix of 40% of Kanaks, 30% of Caldoches (French people borned on the island) and 30% of immigrants from other Melanesian and Asian coutnries.
Politcally, New Caledonia is a TOM (Oversea Territory) of France located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1,500 kilometres (930 mi) east of Australia yet about 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi. from Metropolitan France. It is governed by a Territorial Congress and the French State is represented by a High Commissioner. At a national level, New Caledonia is represented in the French National Assembly by two deputies and a senator.
On the south-eastern tip of the island, Noumea combines the laid back attitude of the South Pacific with the urban elegance of France. There is a profusion of old French colonial houses, tree lined squares, cafés, restaurants and Paris designer labels, mixing with the buoyant contemporary architecture of the new districts. An attractive modern capital in the South Pacific, Noumea is endowed with a French way of life under the tropics ...
Le Grand Casino (adjacent) • Aquarium des Lagons (Open air in Noumea lagoon) • Phare Amédée (built 1865 and the world's 2nd highest iron lighthouse) • Centre Culturel de Tjibaou: Local Kanak cultural centre. Award winning architecture by Renzo Piano, architect of the Centre Georges- Pompidou (Paris) and winner of the 1998 Pritzker Award
