Bariloche

Bariloche

San Carlos de Bariloche is the winter and summer playground of Argentineans, and second most visited destination in the country. Nahuel Huapi is Argentina's oldest national park, encompassing the huge Nahuel Huapi glacier lake and the majestic snow-capped peaks marking the border with Chile. The park provides for plenty of outdoor activities, from leisurely lake cruising to serious mountaineering. Bariloche is the biggest city of a huge Lake District, and serves as a base for many excursions in the region.

Bariloche has a Mediterranean/Alpine climate, with dry windy summer and cooler/humid winters, turning into alpine snowy conditions in the mountain. Although temperature are rather warm in summer, they drop below 10ºC at night due to the proximity of the Andes mountains.

The lake of Nahuel Huapi was known to Spaniards ever since the times of the Conquest of Chile. Several Jesuist missions established themselves in the region but without much success, until the modern settlement of Bariloche developed from a shop established by a German immigrant by 1895. The city of San Carlos de Bariloche was officially founded in 1902. The name Bariloche comes from the autochtonous mapuche language “vuriloche”, meaning "people on the other side of the mountain".

The famous outlaws Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid seeked refuge from the US justice in the area in the early 1900’s, till learning they were being tracked down by the famous Pinkerton detective agency agency. Later on, Bariloche would also become as a haven for Nazi war criminals and there even is a claims that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun lived in the surroundings  for many years after World War I

In the 1930s the city was built to look like an alpine town, a “Little Switzerland” made of wooden and stone buildings. Commerce, however, continued to depend heavily on neiighbouring Chile until the arrival of the railways in 1934, that would connect the town with Nuequen and far off Buenos Aires. From then on, Bariloche grew from being a centre of cattle trade with neighbouring Chile, to a tourism center for the Argentine elite with a cosmopolitan architectural and urban profile.

Beside tourism, farming and services, it is also a scientific centre, home to The Centro Atómico Bariloche, a research center of the National Atomic Energy Commission. During the 1950s, therer was a secret attempt from fromer president Peron to build the world's first fusion reactor, known as the “Huemul Projetct”, for its ubication on the namesake island on lake Nahuel Huapi.
