Chile's main harbour, its Historic Quarter listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and hometown of poet and Nobel Prize Pablo Neruda, the city is the capital of the Valparaíso Province and the Valparaíso Region. Although Santiago is Chile's official capital, the National Congress was established in Valparaíso in 1990. Valparaíso played an important role during the 19th century, when its harbour served as a major stopover for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific through the Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn. A magnet for European immigrants, Valparaíso, during its heyday the city was known as “Little San Francisco” and “The Jewel of the Pacific.”

The colonial city of Valparaiso is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within a natural amphitheatre setting, the city is characterized by an urban layout adapted to the hillsides, crowned with several church spires and coloured wit a patchwork of vivid colour houses. In contrast with the geometrical patern in the plain, the steeped slopes present well preserved early industrial infrastructures, such as numerous elevators and funiculars.

• Viña del Mar

Known as the “Garden City” and part of the Greater Valparaíso area, Viña del Mar is Chile's largest and most famous beach resort, founded in 1874 as a weekend retreat for the rich and wealthy from Valparaiso and Santiago

Santiago

Chile's capital and gateway to Marbella Resort, the towering Andes provide an awesome backdrop for this sprawling metropolis of 5 millions inhabitants. The city is a mixed architectural tapestry of soaring towers, 19th-century classical buildings and colonial Spanish adobe houses, all mixed intertwined with green areas, livelyy markets and quaint old squares.
