The Resort

Cradling in 720 acres of lush tropical grounds in a secluded valley on the northern tip of the island of Phuket, known as the pearl of the Andaman Sea, Blue Canyon Country Club is an award winning golf & spa resort boasting two championship golf courses, an exclusive clubhouse and full country club facilities.

Blue Canyon Lodge is a boutique hotel that provides luxury accommodation and an Executive Lounge with complimentary breakfast, all day tea/coffee, fruits and snacks. The lodge offers five types of rooms and suites, some with balconies facing the Canyon Course and with spectacular views of the sea. Facilities at Blue Canyon's Clubhouse range from the well stocked proshop to fine dining and spa. Blue Canyon's lavish locker rooms include jacuzzis, plunge pool, steam room, sauna, showers and traditional Thai massage. These are complemented by a fitness centre, swimming pool and the Spa @ Blue Canyon, an award winning boutique facility includiing signature therapies for golfers.

Developed in the late 1980's from an abandoned 19th century tin mine and rubber plantation, both courses at Blue Canyon are moulded around existing canyons and woodlands, with minimal changes to the natural landscape. In an age when many new golf courses are little more than man-made reconstruction of the environment, Blue Canyon designer Yoshikazu Kato went to great extreme to ensure that interference with nature were kept to a minimum, creating a masterpiece of course design with spectacular and sometimes daunting hazards.

• The Canyon Course

Yoshikazu Kato (1991) 18 holes - 7,179 yds - Par 72 - CR 74.8 - Slope 141

Johnnie Walker Classics (1994, 1998) + Thailand Open (2005)

The Canyon Course championship-class, regarded as among the best in Asia, and has staged the Johnnie Walker Classics, the Thailand Open and many other major tournaments. Carved into the lush landscape, the course features lakes, towering trees and tree-lined fairways, often doglegged, with long carries and narrow landing areas leading to well guarded, slick greens. The course has room to expand if the long-hitting trend continues.

• The Lakes Course

Yoshikazu Kato (1999) 18 holes - 7,129 yds - par 72 - CR 74.0 - Slope 128

The Lakes Course is a mix of water filled canyons created by open cast mining and natural land flow left relatively unchanged. The front nine runs through lakes and natural canyons while the back nine weaves around scenic lakes and rubber woods. The Lakes is aptly named,  with water coming into play at 17 holes and additional “dry” hazards in the form of about 36 bunkers. The greens run fast and true on the Canyon and the putting surfaces are a little larger on the Lakes. When the wind blows, the degree of difficulty increases considerably. Stray into the rough on the Canyon and the penalty is likely to be a little more severe than on the Lakes.

• Phuket Country Club

Dr. Sukitti Klangwisai, (1989) 18 holes - 6,484 yds - Par 72

Phuket Country Club is the longest established golf course in Phuket. Conveniently located between Phuket Town and Patong beach, twisting through a valley of rolling hills and limestone cliffs. Phuket Country Club is an 18 hole, 72 par course which has hosted a string of national tournaments. Winding over the site of an old tin mine, Phuket Country Club gives a charming variety of holes which take you through landscaped forests, over level stretches and twisting though flowing hillsides.

• Laguna Phuket Golf Club

Max Wexler/David Abell (1992/2004) 18 holes - 6,850 yds - Par 72

Formerly the Banyan Tree Golf Club, Laguna has had a facelift and a name change. All the greens have been rebuilt and reshaped, the once-flat fairways now roll and dip, strategic hazards have been added and more mature trees enhance the woodlands setting. Rapid improvements have seen the course rated in surveys among the top 10 courses in Thailand

• Loch Palm Golf Club

Dr. Sukitti Klangwisai (1998) 18 holes - 6,555 yds - Par 72

Formerly known as the Phuket Century Country Club, The Loch Palm Golf Club Phuket has recently undergone extensive renovations. The new design has ensured that players of all levels will be challenged on this 18 hole, par 72 course. The 6,555 yard layout winds its way between refreshing lakes and rows of shady palm trees before taking you into the hills to traverse the slopes, requiring players to keep tight control of their shots as they hit uphill and downhill. Taking you across ravines and over plateaus with smooth slopes and exciting changes in elevation, the Loch Palm Golf Course is as invigorating to play as it is to gaze upon.

• Mission Hills Golf Resort

Jack Nicklaus (2004) 18 - 6,806 yds - Par 72

Mission Hills has been carved from rubber plantations and sits among Phuket's environmentally-friendly mangroves. Great expanses of white sand beach bunkers have been added to contrast with the translucent blue hues of the ocean and the vibrant greens of the Sea Isle grassed fairways and putting surfaces. It is accurately described as a "piece of living art," the kind of pastiche that Vincent Van Gogh would have created given half a chance and a love of a long drive. The ocean views are delivered at a price: water comes in to play at seven holes. The sea breezes also are a regular feature. What time of day you choose to play can turn a following zephyr into a stiff headwind.

• Red Mountain Golf Club

Jonathan Morrow (2007) 18 holes - 6,781 yds - Par 72

Designer Jonathan Morrow has ingeniously integrated the course into the natural environment, creating an exciting and spontaneous layout ready to challenge golfers of every ability. Nature has ensured that players will face every variety of natural hazard including waste bunkers, towering precipices, deep ravines and flooded gullies. All this while it takes you on a roller-coaster ride through the hills over spectacular gorges and panoramic plateaus with dramatic changes in elevation ensure players will be captivated both by the diversity of play and the spectacular views.

Phuket Island

Phuket Island

About the size of Singapore, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, connected to the mainland by two bridges, and situated off the west coast in the Andaman Sea. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, trade and enjoyed a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and a port of call of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

One of Thailand’s mst popular tourist destination, Phuket is as colourful as it is cosmopolitan and one of the world’s most famous dream destinations - travellers named four of Phuket’s hotels among the world’s best in a recent magazine poll. Heavily developed, Phuket can at times feel a little like Pataya. But there are still uncrowded beaches and large stretch of wild countryside, in particular inland. Sightseeing include Nai Yang National Park & Beaches, the Phuket Zoo & Aquarium, Naka Pearl Farm, Phuket FantaSea and Phuket old town amongst others.

On December 26, 2004, Phuket suffered extensive damage when it was struck by the Boxing Day tsunami caused by an earthquake in northern Indonesia. The waves destroyed several highly populated areas in the region, killing as many as 5,300 people nationwide, and tens of thousands more throughout the wider Asian region. As many as 250 people were reported dead in Phuket, including foreign tourists and as many as a thousand unreported deaths of illegal Burmese workers.
