Golf in Bangkok
There is no other course on the island, but Santiburi can be combined with a golfing stay in Bangkok, gateway to the island and boasting about 60 golf courses. These are usually open to visitors but with restrictions on weekends and bank holidays - previous booking is higly recommended. Worth a special mention are the following facilities, all ranked amongst Asia’s top golf courses.
• Alpine Golf Club
Ron Garl (1996) venue of the Asian Game 1998 + Johnnie Walker Classic
One of Asia’s top rated course, it is not difficult to fall under the charms of this superb parkland layout with all manner of trees, bushes and shrubs, including a wonderful variety of palms, mahoganies and cork trees. Created from totally flat rice paddy fields, the golf course presents now significant elevation changes and a wonderfully rolling undulating design - Its "alpine" earthmounding is quite an extravagance for the usualy flat Bangkok course. Water is also still much in evidence, often with water-protected greens along with beach-style bunkering. This is not a course for the faint-hearted - Some of the drives you'll need to make are as tight as driving through the streets of downtown Bangkok!
• Amata Springs Country Club
Lee E. Schmidt (2005) Asian & European PGA Tours
Meaning “eternal spring”, Amata Spring is one of Thailand's most exclusive courses, strictly only opened to its members and their guests. Sitll, it is well worth the effort of looking for an invitation to play one of the most exciting new layouts and aesthetically rewarding courses in the country. Laid out on on naturally contoured land that slopes gently away from two large lakes, which come into play on several holes, not least the signature island-green 17th, that literally floats in one of the lakes - there is just the green to aim at and a small boat will take you out to the green to putt out, or chip from the island's drop-zone. Apart from its water features, the The bunkering is top-class, with sizeable bunkers threatening every tee shot and approach shot. The well protected, fast and often undulating greens, are complemented by smooth sloping run-off areas, which will test your chipping skills. Unfortunately, the surroundings don’t quite match the beauty of the course, with a mix of light industry and real estate and a small range of ills in the background.
• Navatanee Golf Course
Robert Trent Jones Jr. (1973) venue of the 1975 World Cup
Built specifically for the 1975 World Cup of Golf, Robert Trent Jones Jr. turn what were then rice paddy fields into a testing parkland layout and Thailand's first international standard championship venue. Upgraded by Jones himself in 1999, the current layout extends over relatively flat terrain and doesn't include overly pronounced mounding or fairway contouring, but is still full of classic Trent Jones bunkering. Approach shots will require lifted shots to the green, several of them partuclarly well protected by deep bunkers, while fairway bunkers are as menacing as those. Navatanee has much less water than the average Bangkok course, quite surprising given its paddy field origins.
• Thai Country Club
Denis Griffiths (1996) Asian Tour
With its immaculate presentation and conditioning, coupled with a very strong and classic parkland layout, Thai Country Club is regularly voted as Thailand's best course, and a Top 5 course in Asia. A lot of earht moving and shaping was involved in building the course and it is hard to imagine the terrain here was once totally flat when looking at the sweeping mounded, contoured fairways and elevated greens. This rolling layout is enhanced wiith attractive palm trees lending definition to the holes and plenty of small lakes and ponds very much in play. Fairway and greenside bunkering is superb and any wayward shot from the tee will land in clinging semi-rough, making it easy to spot but difficult to recover. The remarkable clubhouse was awarded the “Best Clubhouse in Asia 2000 - 2005” by Asian Golf Monthly magazine.
Koh Samui is Thailand’s third largest island - although a tiny one, located in the Gulf of Thailand about 35 km from th emailand. Some 25 km at its widest point, the central part of the island is covered by wild jungle mountain peaking up at 635 m. The lowland areas are connected together by a single 51 km road running all around the island, mostly along the coast. The island is surrounded by about sixty other islands, which compose the Ang Thong Marine National Park
On the map alongside places like Goa and Bali, Samui has built its reputation as a hippy island paradise. In the last five years, Samui has become as popular and trendy as Phuket. This pardadise island hapilly mixes neo-hippies and backpackers with fashion tourists and sophisticated travellers. There is something for everyone, from full moon parties to laze on dream beaches with fraying coconut trees or snorkel in crytal clear waters.
