Les Furber and Jim Eremko (1992) Hill/Woodland
Founded in 1992, Karlstein Golf Resort is located some thirty miles Southwest of Prague, in the beautiful surroundings of the Karlstein Castle and the Berounka River. Karlstein is laid out so that almost every hole has a spectacular view of the castle and one could not dream of a more dramatic setting - The Canadian Les Furber and Jim Eremko worked both the 14th C Castle and the surrounding nature preserve into a majestic layout with steep elevation changes. The wooded hilly landscape is an oasis of peace and quiet, with limestone outcrops and a rich fauna and flora - the whole area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Golf in Prague
GreenYacht Hotel & Golf also runs a range of tuition and golf trip packages with private chauffeured car to nearby golf courses. Among these are the Castle Trails to Golf Resort Karlstein (see large picture) and Konopiste, both sited on historical estates around Prague, and the Thermal Springs Tour to Marianske Lazne and Karlovy Vary, both vintage clubs in the famous Bohemian spa resorts of Marienbad and Karlsbad. Golf has long been a tradition in the Czech Republic and courses in Bohemia are amongst the oldest in Continental Europe, built at the turn of the century under the patronage of the royal courts of Europe, who came here to take the waters.
• Praha Golf Klub (Prague)
Kamil Pilat (1920's) Hill/Parkland
Within the city limits of Prague, in Motol and only fifteen minutes from the town centre, Golf Club Praha is a vintage nine hole layout built in the 1920's and designed by Czech architect Kamil Pilat. This exiting nine holler plays differently enough from the middle and back tees to accommodate those with time for a full eighteen hole round. Although many of the tees provide great vistas of Prague, none of the holes matches the views from the tee boxes. But on the other hand it is one of the toughest golf courses in the Czech Republic. It is a very hard one to play because the whole course is very hilly and rolling
• Konopiste Golf Resort, 50 km.
John Burns (2002) Parkland/Woodland
Set on Konopiste Castle hunting estate, the two courses Radecky and d'Este are built around the former manor house and unwinds over rather hilly gorunds, sometimes open and other times heavily woooded. Konopiste offers two exciting rounds of golf full of history amidst this historic estate. Radecky Course was named after one of the original owners of the manor, Vaclav Radecky, a famous marshal during the Napoleonic Wars, while the D''Este course was nameed after the Archduke Ferdinand d´Este, another owner of the estate and successor to the Austrian-Hungarian throne killed in Sarajevo and whose muerder led to World War I.
• Royal GC Marianske Lazne (Marienbad), 160 km.
Architect unknown (1905) Parkland
In the the old thermal town of Marianske Lazne, previously know as Marienbad, this is the oldest course in the Czech Republic. The course was inaugurated in 1905 by HRH Edward II, King of England. Amidst a picturesque landscape, this championship layout was reconstructed and the cluhouse enlarged to host the Volvo PGA tour events.
• Karlovy Vary Golf Resort (Karlsbad), 130 km.
Founded 1904 - C. Noskowski (1933) Parkland/Woodland
Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) is the eldest golf club - it was founded in 1904, although the present layout only dates back to 1933. Karlsbad was established in 1904 by the Gentlemen's Fencing Club to increase the leisure offer for Karlsbad Spa visitors and a nine hole course was laid out through the wooded hillside of the resort, while a complete new golf course was laid out by architect C. Noskowski in 1933. After the fall of communism in 1989, the Golf Resort Karlovy Vary Inc. consortium was established in an effort to bring the quality of the golf facilities to international standards. The golf course underwent a comprehensive renovation and a brand new clubhouse was inaugurated in 1997. The result is a foremost golf resort which is listed amongst European top 100 courses and has hosted several national and international golf tournaments.
Prague - Praha
golfYacht Prague also offers non golfing activities such as river yacht charter and tours of Prague. The romantic Czech capital boasts an extraordinary rich architectural heritage, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Prague lies in the shadow of its Castle, the political and religious symbol of the country rising majestically from a ridge above the Moldau River. The city is divided by the Moldau (Vltava) river, which is crossed by the famous Charles Bridge. On the Left Bank lies the Hradcany "Castle District" and the Mala Strana "Lower Town", the city's most picturesque area extending between the castle and the river. On the Right Bank, the Stare Mesto "Old Town" was the trading centre of Prague during the middle age while the Novo Mesto "New Town" was rationally designed during the 14th century around three main marketplaces, one of which is the famous Wenceslas Square.
Until World War II, Prague was characterised by the generally peaceful coexistence of Czech, Jewish and German culture - the country was ruled by the Hapsburg and the Austro-Hungarian empire for over 300 years. The country enjoyed a short period of independence between World War I and II, but in 1945, Czechoslovakia felt under the political and cultural domination of the Soviet Union until 1989 and in 1993, Czechia and Slovakia peacefully separated after a referendum. Today, Prague is a thriving city and its frenetic activity is played against the miraculously spared and stunning backdrop of its extraordinary rich heritage - Prague is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of its present glory was achieved in the 14th century during the long reign of Charles IV, king of Bohemia and Moravia and Holy Roman Emperor.
